The Great Depression or the Dirty Thirties 
It was a period of time where there was a slow down in our economy.  

October 29, 1929, was know as Black Tuesday because the stock market crashed. This marked the beginning of a period of economic crisis in which many Americans were unemployed.  

Nearly ¼ or 25% of all Americans were jobless. 


Causes of the Great Depression  
  1. Stock market crashed and caused panic. 
  1. Overproduction of industry (too many goods from factories) and agriculture (farming). 
  1. Overuse of credit. 

Effects of the Great Depression 
  1. Poverty, Hungry, and unemployment 
  1. Businesses had to close. 
  1. Banks failed and closed.  
  1. Bread Lines and Soup Kitchens were created by charities. 
  1. People lived in Hoovervilles.  
  1. Depression spread to other countries. 



The Dust Bowl 1933-1937 
A severe drought that swept across the Great Plains 
Grass died, crops couldn’t grow, land was over plowed 
Wind caused HUGE DUST STORMS 



Herbert Hoover  
A "Hooverville" was a shanty town built during the Great Depression by the homeless in the United States.  

They were named after Herbert Hoover, who was President of the United States during the onset of the Depression and was widely blamed for it. 

President Hoover did not believe in the government helping with businesses or assisting Americans.  



Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) 
President 1933-1945 
Made “New Deal” programs to help people and businesses out of the depression.  

CCC- Civilian Conservation Corps- provided jobs to plant trees, conserve soil, control floods, and build bridges 

TVA- Tennessee Valley Authority- build dams to provide cheap electricity to 7 southern states 

WPA- Works Progress Administration- built public buildings, parks, highways, and airports (hired artists and sculptors)

The Roaring 20’s  



US cities were booming in the 1920’s! 
This period after WWI included a culture of social, musical, and artistic growth.  

                                                 
Women wore different clothing, became more independent = became flappers 
19th amendment= women’s right to vote 
People are wealthier- skyscraper and mansions are being built 
Harlem Renaissance- African Americans move to NY develop music, write, and paint 




Langston Hughes- famous poet who wrote about African American struggles and culture during the Harlem Renaissance  

Babe Ruth- baseball superstar that helped make baseball a popular sport  

Louis Armstrong- one of the greatest Jazz artists/ singer and trumpeter  

Charles Lindbergh- first person to make a transcontinental flight (across the Atlantic Ocean)  

Henry Ford- created the assembly line using specialization to make the Model T car  





Chicago had a huge population growth because the city had many places for people to work like railroad factories, meat packing plants, and stockyards.  

The 19th amendment – gave women the right to vote
