Notes For This Unit

The Wright Brothers - The Airplane
Impact on American Life: Revolutionized Transportation
  1. Now we can fly all around the world.
It would take me about 14 hours to drive from Baker Elementary to New York City in a car. It would take 18 hours to get there by train. I can fly to New York city in 2 ½ hours!
  1. Tourism to Kitty Hawk, NC.
The Wright Brothers put Kitty Hawk on the map. Now the city makes $100 million a month from tourists. This helps the economy in North Carolina.

George Washington Carver - Agriculture Science
Impact on American Life: Improved Farming
  1. Now we can grow crops better because of crop rotation.
Carter discovered that if you rotate crops the soils has more nutrients and the plants are healthier.
  1. Many uses for peanuts.
Carver discovered many uses for peanuts because the peanut plant helped nourish the soil and he didn’t want to waste the peanuts. He found over 300 uses for peanuts!

Alexander Graham Bell - The Telephone
Impact on American Life: Improved Communication

Bell’s telephone made it possible for people to communicate over distance.

We have lights in our homes, buildings, and even on our streets that don’t present fire risks. We can work and play long after it gets dark because we have lights.

Social Studies Notes for test

These are the notes we have taken in Social Studies this week from a video we watched and articles we read together. Since students' journals stay in my class, I wanted students to have access to the notes at home if they want to study.

Our test is FRIDAY, AUGUST 9!

Students will need to be able to describe the role of the cattle trails in the 19th century. Everything they need to know is in the notes.

Cattle Trails Video

There was a shortage of meat in the North.

There was a surplus of cows in Texas.

Problem- How can we get cows to the North?

Solution- Cattle Drives by cowboys

There were 2 main cattle trails.

Chisolm Trails

Great Western Trail

Cowboys took 2 months to move cows from Texas to Kansas and Nebraska.

Cows sold for $4 in Texas and $40 in the North.

Why did the cattle drives end? 3 reasons

1.      Law prohibiting cattle drives because of Texas Fever.

2.      Homes and fences being put up.

3.      New railroads were being built coming south into Texas.

The Price You Pay

What was the motivation to spend 2 months driving cattle?

MONEY

What is an incentive?

Something that encourages someone to do something.

Supply and Demand

The meat supply in the North was low and the demand was high; therefore, people were willing to pay $40 a cow.

The meat supply was high in Texas so the demand was low; therefore cows sold for only $4.

Black Cowboys

Who were the black cowboys?

Black cowboys were former slaves who moved west looking for work and equal opportunities.

1 in 4 cowboys were black.

For the first time in American History, African American men received equal pay and equal opportunity as cowboys. They worked alongside white cowboys doing the same jobs. Black cowboys did face discrimination along the trails.
