Math
Please use this link for clarification of math standards

OA2. I can write numerical expressions without evaluating them.
OA2. I can explain numerical expressions without evaluating them.

Science

Notes from class.

EROSION - HUMAN INTERVENTIONS
Flood Control
Dams -built across rivers to stop the flow of water
  • Water can be let out of the dam to control flooding
  • Because a dam holds water, a lake is formed.
  • We use the lake water for irrigation and drinking water.

Levee- a wall like structure built along the bank side of a river
  • Used to hold back water so a flood does not take place
  • Usually built from dirt or concrete

Beach Restoration
Jetty – a wall like structure built out of big rocks to prevent waves from carrying sand away

Plant Vegetation- plants on the beach (especially sand dunes) to help minimize erosion from rain, waves, storms, and tourists

Week of September 16

Science
We are so excited to start our science unit this week!

S5E1 Learning Target: I can explain how the earth changes over time.

Break, Move, Drop Chant

Erosion and Weathering Song

Our Erosion Song

Disney Music Lava Video

Notes from class this week

Constructive Forces – forces that build up Earth’s surface
Examples:
deltas
sand dunes
mountains
ocean ridge

Destructive Forces- forces that break down Earth’s surface
Examples:
weathering
erosion
sinkhole
landslide
tsunami
plant roots
impact of organisms (animal and human)

Both Constructive and Destructive
volcanoes
earthquake
plate tectonics
floods

Weathering – the natural breakdown of rocks into smaller particles
  • This process usually happens because of water, wind, ice, or plants
  • The particles (sediment) eventually become soil
  • The sediment DOES NOT MOVE during weathering
Erosion- weathered rock is carried away by gravity, water, ice, or wind
  • It gradually (slowly) moves the sediment to another place.
  • If sediment starts moving it’s erosion.
TYPES OF EROSION
Water erosion- when too much water is in one area the water flows over the ground and takes rocks, dirt, and particles with it. Examples- landslides and mudslides
Wind erosion- when wind moves small particles such as sand and dirt
Ice erosion- when glaciers move across land forms and move sediment to a new place

Math
For better understanding of our math standards please use this link and look for the standards being taught this week- NBT1 and NBT2.

NBT1 Learning Target: I can recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

NBT.2 Learning Target: I can explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10.
